TOP STORY
Transcriptomic Architecture of the Adjacent Airway Field Cancerization in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Researchers identified differentially expressed gene features between non-small cell lung cancer and airways compared with normal lung tissues, a subset of which, after gene set enrichment analysis, statistically significantly distinguished large airways in lung cancer patients from airways in cancer-free smokers. [J Natl Cancer Inst] Abstract

Particulate Nature of Inhaled Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Determines Systemic Effects and Mechanisms of Pulmonary Inflammation in Mice
Because zinc ions may be involved in the toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP), investigators compared adverse effects of inhaled aerosolized ZnONP and zinc nitrate in mice. [Nanotoxicology] Abstract

Autocrine Ligands of the Epithelial Growth Factor Receptor Mediate Inflammatory Responses to Diesel Exhaust Particles
As cigarette smoke-induced IL-8 expression by epithelial cells involves transactivation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), scientists studied the effects of diesel exhaust particles on IL-8 release and the role of the EGFR. [Resp Res] Abstract | Full Article

The Progression of Comorbidity in IL-18 Transgenic Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Mice Model
The authors previously reported a new mouse model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) utilizing the human surfactant protein C promoter SP-C to drive the expression of mature mouse IL-18 cDNA; constitutive IL-18 overproduction in the lungs of transgenic mice induces severe emphysematous change, dilatation of the right ventricle, and mild pulmonary hypertension with aging. They evaluated the progression of comorbidity in their COPD model. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Transcriptional and Posttranscriptional Regulation and Endocytosis Were Involved in Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle-Induced Interleukin-8 Overexpression in Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells
The mechanisms underlying zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs)-induced interleukin 8 (IL-8) gene expression have not been fully characterized. The transcription inhibitor actinomycin D and the BEAS-2B cells stably overexpressing wild-type or mutated IL-8 promoter at the NFκB or C/EBPβ binding site were used to determine the involvement of transcriptional mechanisms. [Cell Biol Toxicol] Abstract

miR-142-3p Represses TGF-β-Induced Growth Inhibition through Repression of TGFβR1 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Researchers investigated the function and regulation of TGF-β signaling-based miRNAs in non-small cell lung cancer. Computational algorithms predicted that the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of TGFβR1 is a target of miR-142-3p. A luciferase reporter assay confirmed that miR-142-3p can directly bind to 3′-UTR of TGFβR1. [FASEB J] Abstract

cAMP Signaling Inhibits Radiation-Induced ATM Phosphorylation Leading to the Augmentation of Apoptosis in Human Lung Cancer Cells
Scientists investigated the mechanism through which cAMP signaling regulates ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) activation and cellular responses to ionizing radiation in lung cancer cells. [Mol Cancer]

Downregulation of HOXA1 Gene Affects Small Cell Lung Cancer Cell Survival and Chemoresistance under the Regulation of miR-100
Scientists aimed to characterize the clinical significance and functional roles of HOXA1 in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Expression of HOXA1 was examined in 63 cases of SCLC tissues and 29 cases of blood by immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction methods. [Eur J Cancer] Abstract

TRAP1 Regulates Proliferation, Mitochondrial Function and Has Prognostic Significance in NSCLC
The effect of tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) ablation on cell proliferation, survival, apoptosis and mitochondrial function was determined in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). [Mol Cancer Res] Abstract

REVIEWS
Desensitization by Different Strategies of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor and ErbB4
The authors describe recent advances in the desensitization mechanisms of epidermal growth factor receptor and ErbB4, mainly in alveolar epithelial cells and hypothalamic neurons, respectively. [J Pharmacol Sci] Abstract | Full Article
